Laurel Price Jones
Laurel Price Jones has served as GW’s vice president for Development and Alumni Relations since March 2005. In this role, she has initiated a number of important efforts. Key among these are a review of advancement activity, a survey of alumni attitudes, the establishment of a Parents Fundraising Council, and development of two mini-campaigns, one to create a legacy fund for President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and another to develop scholarship support.
In June 2006, Price Jones organized a Leadership Retreat to engage University officials and volunteer leaders in a dialogue about the future of the University. Nearly 200 individuals participated in the retreat, considering key topics such as upgrading major facilities, building GW’s endowment, and developing a compelling vision for the University’s future.
Before coming to GW, Price Jones was vice president for development and alumni relations at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). During her five years at RIT, she successfully managed a $300-million-dollar campaign and increased annual giving from an average of $15 million annually to an average of more than $44 million annually.
Prior to her position at RIT, Price Jones was the managing director for development at University Hospitals of Cleveland, director of corporate and foundation relations for institutional advancement at the Cleveland Clinic, and director of corporate and foundation support at Oberlin College. In each of these capacities, Price Jones secured major gifts by matching the interests of the donors with the needs of the institutions. Additionally, her background encompasses myriad experiences, including several years as a development writer for Oberlin College and, earlier, as a science and mathematics teacher for Oberlin City Schools.
Price Jones has published extensively. She wrote on science and math topics for many of the major textbook companies. She also has written book reviews for newspapers, and her articles have appeared in National Geographic World, Cricket, Cobblestone, Instructor, Harrowsmith, and The Woman Engineer, among other periodicals.
As well as lecturing at conferences and colleges, Price Jones is committed to public service. Music is one of her passions, and she has served on the boards of the Hochstein School of Music in Rochester, the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra, and the Oberlin Chorister’s Ensemble, where she was board president.
Price Jones received her bachelor’s degree, with a major in physics, in 1970, and a master’s degree in biology in 1972 from Oberlin College in Ohio.
